While it isn’t a traditional open-world title, all four maps are interconnected, akin to Bloodborne, and players can return to a central hub called CPU Plaza to access other worlds. The Access Controller is the first PlayStation controller designed to accommodate for the needs of various disabilities, allowing disabled gamers to play with greater ease. It includes multiple different stick caps, buttons with swappable tags, industry-standard AUX ports to connect other accessibility devices, and supports up to 30 different profiles. It can also be paired with a second Access Controller and a DualSense, which can all act as a single controller input. The follow-up to the original PS VR uses headset-mounted cameras rather than lights, and has a vibration motor. The interior display is four times the resolution of the original, and 3D audio adjusts with your head position.
But overall, in a free game, a slew of challenge levels to test yourself in is just icing on a near-perfect cake. In between each standard platforming level are dedicated sections to unique suits for Astro. Memory Meadow, for instance, Astro becomes a little roller ball that uses the Dualsense’s trackpad for control instead of the left thumbstick. Astro’s Playroom is a very simple and small in-scale and scope game. Every bit of platforming presents almost no challenge, and so do the enemies.

Whilst initially awestruck by the game, it didn’t take very long to see why Sony’s catchy ‘For the Players’ tagline is an admirable slogan built on a history of gaming icons. This game is incredibly well-made; the care put into it is visible in every corner; but as it is it was not made for people like me. Toro the cat filled the role to a degree in Japan but he never fronted any major games and has since faded from the limelight. But now there is a new challenger and while Astro isn’t much of a character his games are becoming some of the best in Sony’s line-up.

Combined with the hardware it’s bundled on, it’s something very special indeed – and one of the best launch titles I can remember in an age. It’s a phenomenal thing, taken even further with adaptive triggers that provide meaningful, forceful feedback. It deserves a place among the greats though – Astro’s Playroom has the coherence, character and abundance of ideas, executed with real clarity, of the very best platformers.
